The
Graduate Institute of Development Studies (
GIDS, French: Institut universitaire d’études du développement, IUED) was created in
1961, under the name
Institut Africain de Genève.
GIDS has the main objective of promoting teaching and research concerning development and to encourage students from
the South.
It aims to raise diverse questions (social, economic, environmental) and to strengthen links between theory and experience, reflection and action. The
Graduate Institute of Development Studies is attached to (but independent of) the
University of Geneva.
Near Future
IUED and the
Graduate Institute of International Studies (HEI) are currently engaged in an integration process that will lead to the creation of a new institution at the beginning of 2008, the
Graduate Institute of International Studies and Development (IHEID).
This new Institute will combine in a unique manner the fields of Development and International Relations and will offer a much wider choice of teaching and research activities.
The existing degree programmes (Master’s and Ph.D. in Development Studies, Master’s in International Affairs, Master’s and Ph.D. in International Studies) will continue to be offered in the following years.
